Santa Cruz, located on the southeast of the island of Madeira, is painted with the vivid turquoise blue of the ocean. In front of the eastern part of the city, 500 metres off the coast, there is an underwater secret of great interest: Baixa de Santa Catarina.
It starts around 13 metres deep, but the adventure begins at 25 metres, where there's a platform in the rock, from where a new world opens up. On the way down, divers will come across ornate wrasse, chromis, colonies of encrusting anemones and clown prawns. It is also common to see a large round stingray (Taeniura grabata) resting in a sheltered area and a giant anemone (Telmactatis cricoides). It is possible to descend up to 40 metres.
This feast of colours and marine movement can be experienced by divers of all ages with more or less experience. The diving schools and various specialised companies present in this area are renowned for their professionalism, knowledge, safety and hospitality.
