There are days in life that feel like a series of extremes, where contrasting experiences somehow complement each other perfectly. June 28th was one of those days for me in Madeira.

My morning was spent in Camacha, soaking in the island’s authentic countryside charm — local markets, lush landscapes and the quiet rhythm of traditional Madeiran life. By evening, I found myself stepping into a completely different world: the iconic Belmond Reid’s Palace, Madeira’s grand hotel, for an unforgettable evening of fine dining.

Sunset at Belmond Reid’s Palace

The evening began with a cocktail on the hotel’s stunning terrace, overlooking the gardens and the Funchal skyline. From there, the panoramic view of Funchal Bay set the perfect stage for what was to come.

As I enjoyed one of the house cocktails and watched the sun dip towards the horizon, I felt that familiar sense of relaxation I experience every time I visit Reid’s. I’ve been fortunate to enjoy their hospitality on two previous occasions, and each time the hotel’s blend of timeless elegance and contemporary luxury has left a lasting impression. The gentle ocean breeze, the soft hum of the city below and the calm, attentive service make it a truly special experience.

Dining at Brisa do Mar

This evening was particularly special as we dined at the recently opened Brisa do Mar, Reid’s newest culinary offering. This exquisite restaurant is poised to become one of the best dining spots in Funchal — a distinction it fully deserves.

Brisa do Mar, meaning “Sea Breeze” in Portuguese, is perfectly named, perched above the ocean on the edge of the hotel.

The menu celebrates Madeira’s rich maritime bounty, executed with finesse and creativity. I began with a ceviche of local fish, followed by the Catalan de Peixe e Marisco — the most moreish dish of fish, shellfish and vegetables slowly stewed in a fragrant broth.

I could happily eat this every day. Each course combined traditional flavours with modern techniques, capturing the very essence of fine dining in Madeira.

The experience was complemented by a selection of Madeira and Portuguese wines recommended by our knowledgeable sommelier, each pairing perfectly with the seafood.

An evening to remember

As we dined, the sun set over the Atlantic, casting a golden glow across the ocean and illuminating the hotel’s historic architecture. The soft lighting, elegant table settings and uninterrupted sea views created an atmosphere that felt both intimate and refined.

I finished the meal with a pudim Abade de Priscos, a traditional Portuguese dessert made with Port wine, egg yolks and lard, famous for its silky-smooth texture and rich flavour, and found throughout the country.

Just as we finished dessert, I learned that it was the final weekend of the Atlantic Festival Madeira, and that evening’s highlight was a spectacular pyromusical firework display from Portugal, presented as a special guest performance since Madeira was the organiser.

From our table, the show was nothing short of magical. Fireworks danced across the sky, their reflections shimmering in the calm waters of Funchal Bay below. Watching the Atlantic Festival from the comfort of Brisa do Mar was the perfect finishing touch to an already unforgettable evening.

Where luxury meets intimacy

One of the most remarkable aspects of visiting Reid’s is how effortlessly the hotel balances grandeur with a sense of intimacy. Despite being at one of the island’s most iconic properties, the experience always feels personal and exclusive.

The attentive service, thoughtful menu and extraordinary setting all reinforce why Belmond Reid’s Palace is home to some of the finest dining experiences in Funchal. With its breathtaking views, refined cuisine and impeccable service, Brisa do Mar is a welcome new addition to this distinguished collection.

A perfect Madeira experience

The day felt like the perfect contrast — from a peaceful morning in rural Camacha to an elegant evening at Reid’s. Moving between rustic traditions and sophisticated dining made each moment more vivid and memorable.

For those seeking a truly special dining experience in Madeira, Brisa do Mar at Belmond Reid’s Palace would be my choice. Whether drawn by exceptional cuisine, stunning ocean views or the chance to watch the Atlantic Festival fireworks from your table, this is an evening that lingers long after the last spark fades from the sky.

It is a reminder that Reid’s is more than a hotel — it is a symbol of Madeira’s hospitality and culinary excellence, a place where every visit becomes a story worth telling. And to end the evening perfectly, be sure to enjoy a drink on the terrace.
